'Hours of Idleness' exists in a confusing variety of issues and variants. This one is watermarked "LL [not II as described by Randolph] 1806," D3 has the correct amended text, and page 171 is correctly numbered; the trimmed size is 7 7/8" x 5 1/8", i.e. demi-octavo. Wise, Coleridge and Randolph disagree over the exact status of this edition, but it is likely to have been produced after the initial printing. 'Hours of Idleness' was the first volume of verse intended by Byron for general circulation, the contents rearranged from the privately printed 'Fugitive Pieces' (suppressed immediately after publication) and 'Poems on Several Occasions' (printed in an edition of one hundred copies and now virtually unobtainable), omitting twenty of the original poems and adding twelve new ones. It gave rise to Brougham's devastating criticism in the 'Edinburgh Review', the effect of which was to change the course of Byron's literary career. A fine and attractive set.
