WESTMORELAND ELECTION. HAMILTON (Thomas).
Autograph song on the County Election of 1818.
36 lines. Contained in a folio sized letter to L. S. Dixon, Steward to Sir PhilipMusgrave at Eden Hall, together with a note about the collection of fines for Sir Philip, game on Hartley Fell and the need for a Watcher. With integral address panel and postal markings. The 1818 election was of course famous for Wordsworth's "Two Addresses" published in support of the Tory party candidate. This alliance appeared renegade to the Liberals in general and to Shelley in particular, but Wordsworth was alarmed by the discontent of the period and fully supported the repressive measures embodied in the candidature of William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale. Written on the 1st. August 1818, the song is entitled "Brougham Defeated - a new Song to the tune of Oh dear What can the Matter Be Joney So long at the Fair." A reference in the song is made to the Kendall Fell Riders. Small hole where the seal has been removed touching a few letters, otherwise in very good condition.
