SCOTT. AITON (William).

A History of the Rencounter at Drumclog, and Battle of Bothwell Bridge, in the Month of June, 1679, With an Account of what is Correct, and What is Fictitious in the "Tales of My Landlord," Respecting these Engagements...

Hamilton, W. M. Borthwick and Co. 1821. First edition. 8vo. pp. 131. [ii]. Todd & Bowden 98Dd. Aiton is concerned that "since the author has written a sort of medley between the true History and a Novel" there is a danger of the events surrounding the battle described in "Old Mortality" being taken as factually correct. He goes into considerable detail, comparing the ground, fields, paths, houses etc., as described in Scott, with the reality. Aiton was the Sheriff-Substitute in Hamilton. Folding frontispiece. Lacks wrappers, otherwise very good.
