London, Printed for the Author. 1790. First edition. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards. 8vo. pp. vii, [1], 88. The great prison reformer died in January 1790 at the age of 62. This quickly written biography was the first to appear. Also includes Edward Topham's previously printed account of the miseries of solitary confinement and William Haley's "Verses to the Memory of John Howard, Esq." Ownership inscription of William Alder dated 1803. Spine worn in two places, covers rubbed, some spotting and browning throughout. Scarce: no copy at the BL according to ESTC.
