Lasner 109; Nelson 331: "O'Sullivan's collection of macabre short stories is a gem of book design and illustration"; Bleiler "The Guide to Supernatural Fiction" page 393: "Elaborately written fin de siècle stories with more than a dash of Stevenson in them. Colorful and characterized by the aloof sensationalism of the period." The Beardsley frontispiece of Madame Jahn is one of his most successful drawings, the heavier pen work on the face and table contrasting with the dress which is outlined in dots. One or two light marks to the cloth.
