[WILDE (Oscar)].

The Woman's World. Edited by Oscar Wilde. January 1888.

London, Cassell and Company, Limited. 1888. Original pink wrappers. Folio. pp. 97 - 144. Wilde became the editor of "The Woman's World" in November 1887 and held the editorship for twenty four numbers until October 1889. Initially enthusiastic about the position, Wilde soon took to appearing at the editorial offices less and less - the time he could manage without a cigarette according to his assistant Arthur Fish. Under his influence, nevertheless, the magazine carried many articles on such subjects as feminism and women's suffrage as well as articles reflecting Wilde's aesthetic ethos. This issue includes Wilde's reviews of Madame Adelaide Ristori's "Etudes et Souvenirs" (1887), Elizabeth Rachel Chapman's "The New Purgatory and Other Poems" (1887), Lady Augusta Noel's "Hithersea Mere" (1887), Alice Corkran's "Margery Merton's Childhood" (1887) and Emily Pfeiffer's "Women and Work" (1887). Among the other contributors are Lady Wilde ("Historic Women," a poem), Lady Constance Howard and George Fleming. 8 pp. advertisements at front; 4 pp. advertisements at rear. More usually found in bound volumes without the fragile wrappers which have Wilde's name prominently displayed. Neatly rebacked, edges torn with loss.
