Nine critical essays treating contemporary literature, (Browning, Mrs. Humphry Ward and Gosse among others) originally published anonymously in the "Guardian" between 1886 and 1890. The impetus for the publication of the book came from Edmund Gosse who contributes an anonymous preface. The first trade edition was published in 1901. Head of spine chipped, otherwise a very good copy.
