Written in the aftermath of the Jameson Raid when Schreiner was deeply disillusioned with the activities of Cecil Rhodes, the novel depicts the atrocities committed by an English soldier engaged in pacifying Rhodesia. The frontispiece, depicting a mass hanging, was later suppressed. Easton Neston book-label. 2 pp. undated advertisements at front; 24 pp. advertisements dated 1897. A very good copy.
