[FORD MADOX FORD]. HUGO (Victor).

Châtiments.

Londres, W. Jeffs. 1862. Nouvelle Edition. Original wrappers. 12mo. pp. 248. A notable associationcopy, inscribed on the upper wrapper firstly, "Ford Madox Brown from his friend A.C. Swinburne. Jan. '66" and then "Ford H. Hueffer from f.m.B. [Ford Madox Brown, Ford's grandfather] April 21/93." Victor Hugo was Swinburne's poetical and political hero and the subject of a book by him in 1886. At the time of composition in 1885 he would write to Eliza Lynn Linton, "I am writing today on "Châtiments" - of which I used day after day to repeat pages to myself as I walked up and down alone on the beach between Bonchurch and Shanklin, nearly thirty (or at least more than twenty-five) years ago." Upper and lower wrappers detached and chipped at edges, spine defective.
