PETERS (William Theodore).

Posies out of Rings, and Other Conceits.

London, John Lane the Bodley Head. 1896. First edition. Original pink cloth. 12mo. pp. vii, 77. Peters, a young American poet, lived for a time in London where he was a "permanent guest" at the Rhymers' Club. In 1892 he asked Dowson to write him a Pierrot play in which he was to perform in aid of the Primrose League, a Conservative Party organization. Somewhat rashly in view of the considerable work involved, Dowson accepted and just managed to complete the work on time. The play was published by Smithers in 1897 with illustrations by Beardsley. Peters's original verse epilogue, which was omitted from that publication, is part of the present collection. Later Peters moved to Paris where he published "The Tournament of Love" (Brentano's, 1894) and contributed to the review the "Quartier Latin" Even for a Nineties poet his fate was exceptional - dying of starvation in a garret. The cover and title-page designed by Patten Wilson. 20 pp. advertisements dated 1896. Covers rather soiled. An uncommon book.
