Set in New York state, the author states his theme in the preface to be "the disputes between the 'Squatters' or non-paying settlers, in the western portion of the State of New York, and the original grantees, to whom the soil was apportioned by the Dutch governors.." First published the previous year in America under the title "The Old Patroon, Or, the Great Van Broek Property." In a secondary binding without the publisher's name on the spines. 2 pp. advertisements at end of volume 2. Cloth a little rubbed and nicked, but overall a very good set.
