BELL (George Kennedy Allen).
Delphi, being the Newdigate Prize Poem, MCMIV.
Oxford, B.H. Blackwell; London, Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. 1904 First edition. Original blue wrappers. 8vo. pp. 16. Oliver St. John Gogarty was awarded a "proxime accessit" in the same competition. He and Bell were close friends and exchanged a lengthy correspondence after Gogarty returned to Ireland in 1904 (published in "Many Lines to Thee," Dolmen Press, 1971). The letters contain much of Joycean interest, Gogarty writing on June 26th, 1904, of trying to sell Joyce's "two pretty songs": "I am disposing of 30 of his lyrics at £1 a piece or 5/- for one." Loose in wrappers which are slightly worn at the edges.
