Buchbeschreibung

CRAWLEY (Richard).

Horse & Foot; or, Pilgrims to Parnassus.

London, John Camden Hotten. 1868 First edition. Original green cloth, bevelled edges. 8vo. pp. [8],72. Presentation copy: "John Horsfall from his sincere friend Richard Crawley." Loosely inserted 3 page ALS dated 17 July, 1884 from Richard Crawley in which he recommends a man in Leeds (John Horsfall) who might help the recipient's brother. "Horse and Foot," a satire in verse on contemporary poets which begins with an invocation to John Stuart Mill, is particularly critical of the influence of Wordsworth, "I cannot help thinking that his critical opinions have exercised a most degrading influence over our literature." Crawley's contemporaries such as Browning, Tennyson, Coventry Patmore and Thomas Woolner fare no better. However, he expresses his enthusiasm for the works of William Morris, Christina Rossetti and, above all, for Swinburne. Bookplate of John Horsfall. 16 pp. undated advertisements. A very good copy.
