[BLACKMORE (R.D.).]

The Farm and Fruit of Old. A Translation in Verse of the First and Second Georgics of Virgil. By a Market-Gardener.

London, Sampson Low, Son, and Co. 1862 First edition. Original light blue cloth. 8vo. pp. vi, 57. Blackmore's early literary career was devoted to poetry. His first book of verse ("Poems by Melanter") was published in 1854; his first work of fiction in 1864. His success as a writer of fiction ("Lorna Doone" was published in 1869) did not preclude further attempts such as these translations - see "The Georgics" below. The present work is scarce with copies at the BL and NLS only in COPAC. A fine copy.
