CLARKE (Charles Cowden).

Carmina Minima.

London, Simpkin, Marshall & Co. 1859 First edition. Original green wrappers. 8vo. pp. [4], 34. Inscribed by Cowden Clarke's wife, "Frederick Haines Esq. from his gratefully affectionate friend Mary Cowden Clarke. Villa Novello. Feb. 1893." In addition annotated by Mary Cowden Clarke after the last verse: "Graven on his resting-place in the cemetary Stagliano near Genoa March 1877." On the last blank she has written an epitaph to be added to the head-stone on her death: "Here lies his wife, beside him still,/In death as Life, by God's good will/On Earth most bless'd as Wife and Daughter,/Firm trust in Heaven this boon have taught her. Mary Victoria Cowden-Clarke (born Novello). Born 22nd June 1809. Died ." Mary Cowden Clarke was the eldest daughter of Vincent Novello, the composer, organist and arranger. His circle of friends included many literary figures such as Lamb, Leigh Hunt, Shelley and Keats about whom Mary and her husband Charles Cowden Clark were to write a volume of reminiscences. The Cowden Clarkes retired to Genoa in 1861. Rebacked, small repair to front free-endpaper. Cambridge, Leeds and BL in COPAC.
