HOUSMAN (Laurence).

Pains and Penalties: The Defense of Queen Caroline. A Play in Four Acts.

London, Sidgwick & Jackson Ltd. 1911 First edition. Original blue cloth. 8vo. pp. viii, 89. ColbeckI, page 397. Housman's play fell foul of the Lord Chamberlain on the somewhat unconvincing reason that the play dealt with "a sad historical episode of comparatively recent date in the life of an unhappy lady." Tipped in limerick in Housman's autograph, dated October 1910: "There was once a thing called the Censor/Whose judgement grew denser and denser:/That need cause no surprise/For he dotted the "i"s,/And crossed all the "t"s of Lord Spencer." 2 pp. undated advertisements. Some foxing to preliminaries and the advertisements.
