BEARDSLEY.
Under the Hill and Other Essays in Prose and Verse.
London, John Lane the Bodley Head. 1904 First edition. Original blue decorative cloth gilt, top edge gilt. 4to. pp. xvi, 70. Lasner 141 (The Bodley Head at the foot of the spine). Haldane Macfall's copy presented to him by his wife on September 21st 1909, with his bookplate designed by Edward Gordon Craig. Macfall has taken offense with a number of John Lane's comments in the introduction, annotating the offending passages in pencil with accusations of lying and betrayal by Lane, especially in relation to the "Yellow Book" affair. Even the advertisements for Lane's publications come in for criticism for being misleading. Macfall's monograph on Beardsley would be published in 1928. Includes 17 drawings, three of which are published for the first time. The literary contents consist of "Under the Hill" (an expurgated version of "The Story of Venus and Tannhäuser", "The Three Musicians", "The Ballad of a Barber" and a translation of Catullus's "Carmen" - all from "The Savoy." 4 pp. undated advertisements. Upper corner knocked, otherwise a very good copy.
