[ESSEX HOUSE PRESS.]

The Essex House Song Book. A Collection of Some Two Hundred Representative Songs of England, together with some Music, from the Middle Ages to Our Own Day. Edited by Jane R. Ashbee.

[Chipping Camden, Essex House Press]. N.D. [1903-1905] One of 200 copies on paper. The unbound gatherings classified in ten separate sections and preserved in the original ten green linen portfolios. "A Bibliography of the Essex House Press" 186-192. Consists of 200 representative songs of England together with their music from the Middle Ages to the present day. Printed in red and black in the Endeavour type created by C.R. Ashbee's, the "Song Book" was one of his favourites of all the Essex House books he printed. The different sections of the work were offered for sale separately and, in some instances, the different sheets were also offered separately at 1s a sheet. An unknown number of copies were also bound up in book-form. Not surprisingly, therefore, the work is rarely found in its original issued state. Ashbee began the Essex House Press with two Albion handpresses he bought from the Kelmscott Press after the death of William Morris. In 1902 the press moved out of London with the attendant Guild of Handicraft and moved to Chipping Camden in Gloucestershire. In fine condition.
