Charles Heath was born in 1761 in Worcestershire where his father owned extensive paper mills. In 1791 he set up his press in Monmouth and traded as a jobbing printer as well as publishing his own topographical works on Monmouthshire. His picturesque descriptions helped attract a growing number of tourists to the area. 'The Excursion Down the Wye' was first published in 1796. It covers the whole of the voyage from Ross to Chepstow and was the first part of a work that was to be followed by two more parts but which seem never to have been printed. Only occasional (erratic) pagination - possibly consists of extracts put together by Heath from other of his printed works. (Heath published another work on Tintern Abbey in 1793.)III. [HORNBY (Charles)]. A Small Specimen of the Many Mistakes in Sir William Dugdale's Baronage. Exhibited in Some Remarks on about half a page of that Voluminous Work. In a Letter &c. Being the reprint of a scarce and curious Pamphlet, written by the late learned Dr. Richard Rawlinson, and addressed to that eminent Antiquary, Mr. Thomas Hearne, of Oxford. Containing a valuable and interesting Critique on Sir William Dugdale's Account of the noble family of the Clares, Earls of Gloucester and Hertford, Who formerly were Lords of such extensive Possessions in the County of Monmouth. pp. [8], 64. Monmouth, printed and Sold by Charles Heath; Sold in London by Longman and Co. 1801. The 1730 edition of 'A Small Specimen of the Many Mistakes in Sir William Dugdale's Baronage' is attributed by ESTC to Charles Hornby. Charles Heath, who edited this edition, suggests that the work is by Richard Rawlinson. This edition not recorded in COPAC.IV.
