Cambridge, Macmillan and Co. 1859. First edition. Original blue cloth, decorated with gilt. All edges gilt. 8vo. pp. xi. 228. Wolff 3330. Double page pictorial title illustrated by Richard Doyle. Numerous other smaller engravings by W. J. Linton found throughout the text. This was Hughes' only other novel apart from "Tom Brown's School Days" and its less acclaimed sequel "Tom Brown at Oxford". It tells of a London clerk who witnesses the local custom of cleaning the White Horse of Uffington. 16 pp. advertisements dated 1858. Slight foxing, spine nicked, otherwise a fine copy.
