Contemp. brown full calf, covers with double gilt fillets around the borders. Spine gilt and with onlaid titlelabels.Last 75 pages of vol 2 waterstained. Volume I begins with a note to Lieutenant General Cadogan which precedes No. I, the March 12, 1713 issue, the volume closes with No. 82, June 15. The second volume begins with a note to Mr. Pulteney which precedes No. 83, June 16, 1713, the volume closes with No. 175, Oct 1, followed by the index. The Guardian was a periodical started in March 1713. It professed at the outset to abstain from political questions. Addison contributed with 51 papers to it. It included also among its contributors the philosopher and Bishop George Berkeley (1685-1753), the poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744), and the poet John Gay (1685-1732). Owing to some disagreement with Tonson, the publisher, The Guardian came to an abrupt end in Oct. 1713. 'Valuable periodical', Lowndes 952.
