Richard Harris Barham's (1788-1845) 'Ingoldsby Legends' was first published in magazines and in 1840 reissued in bookform, by their humour, felicity of verse, narrative power and variety of subject, they became immensely popular, though charges of irreverence and the like have been made against them. The author was particularly successfull in the grotesque or frankly comic treatment of medieval legend.
