Cassius Dionysius Longinus (ca. 213-273) was an Hellenistic rhetorician and philosophical critic. who became chief counsellor in state affairs to Zenobia, queen of Palmyra. 'On the Sublime' is a work of the first importance. Zachary Pearce (1690-1774) was an English bishop of Bangor and bishop of Rochester. He was a controversialist, and a notable early critical writer. He became vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, in 1726[6]. He was Dean of Winchester in 1739, bishop of Bangor in 1748, and bishop of Rochester in 1756. In 1761 he turned down the position of bishop of London.[4] He was Dean of Westminster 1756-1768. His edition of 'De sublimitate' was first published in 1724. 'In the first edition he has presented us with a true text of his author, a new latin version, and some elegant and erudite notes' about this edition Dibdin wrote 'This is a very useful and respectable edition'.
