LONGINUS, DIONYSIUS CASSIUS.

De sublimitate.

Ex recensione Zachariah Pearce. Annimadversiones interpretum excerpsit suas et novam versionem adiecit Samuel Friedrich Nathanal Morus. Leipzig, hered. Wiedmann et Reich, 1769. XXXIIII+288+(36) s. Text in Greek and Latin. Contemp. half calf. Names (Fr. Münter and Georg Linde) on free front endpaper. Cassius Dionysius Longinus (ca. 213-273) was an Hellenistic rhetorician and philosophical critic. who became chief counsellor in state affairs to Zenobia, queen of Palmyra. 'On the Sublime' is a work of the first importance. Zachary Pearce (1690-1774) was an English bishop of Bangor and bishop of Rochester. He was a controversialist, and a notable early critical writer. He became vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London, in 1726[6]. He was Dean of Winchester in 1739, bishop of Bangor in 1748, and bishop of Rochester in 1756. In 1761 he turned down the position of bishop of London.[4] He was Dean of Westminster 1756-1768. His edition of 'De sublimitate' was first published in 1724. 'In the first edition he has presented us with a true text of his author, a new latin version, and some elegant and erudite notes' about this edition Dibdin wrote 'This is a very useful and respectable edition'. Dibdin II,177-178. 'Longinus gilt zu Unrecht als Verfasser eines griechischen literarästhetischen Essays 'Über das Erhabene'. Die feinsinnige Schrift mit ihren zahlreichen Zitaten aus klassischen Autoren ist ein wertvolles Denkmal der von den Alten geübten ästhetischen Kritik; sie hat die moderne Literaturästhetik gewaltig beeinflusst.'
