Covers with triple gilt filet around the border. Spine richly gilt. JAMES BEATTIE (1735-1803) was a noted Scotch poet and professor of moral philosophy at Marischal College in Aberdeen. His fame in his own lifetime rested on two works 'Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth' (1770), an attack on Hume, and 'The Minstrel' (1771-74), see p. 41-76. The Minstrel emphasizes the effect of nature; the poem influenced the 19th-century romantics, particularly Lord Byron. Contained in this collection is 'Memoirs of the Life of Dr. James Beattie' signed 'A.C.' and 'The Life of Collins'. WILLAM COLLINS (1721-59) was one of the best 18th century poets. His poems shows a powerful imagination informing a classical. His most famous odes are 'To Evening' (p. 295) and 'To the Passion' (p.301).
