Thomas Bird Mosher.

MOSHER, THOMAS BIRD. - Pirate Prince of Publishers. A Comprehensive Bibliography and Source Guide to The Mosher Books, Reflecting England's National Literature and Design. With an Introduction by William E. Fredeman. New Castle, Delaware, Oak Knoll Press; London The British Library, 1998. 4to. XVI+536 p. Richly illustr. in colour and black and white. Orig. brown cloth in dustwrapper. Thomas Bird Mosher (1852-1923) was one of America's most original and controversial publishers, denounced as 'Literary pirate' by some, and praised as 'Prince of Publishers' by others. The work unravels the unique publishing story behind the piracy slanders and more. Anyone interested in the spread of British fine literature and book design through the private press movement must take Mosher into account. 'The Mosher Books' include works by authors such as William Morris, Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, A. C, Swinburne, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, George Meredith and Robert Browning. Mosher's books also introduced to the public the designs of Willam Morris, Rossetti, William Blake, Rickett, Pissarro and Strang. Well-known bookbinders also embellished Mosher's productions with their best work.
