Kamawa-Za.

Burmese religious manuscript, consisting of extracts from Pali texts used for various ceremonies ofthe Buddhist faith, measuring 56 x 13 cm, containing 16 lacquered leaves of text, applied in thick black ink on a gold ground with lavish vermilion ornament, the first and last leaves additionally decorated with Buddhist deities, preserved in thick wooden boards, similarly gilded and decorated, bevelled edges, pierced throughout with a single hole (probably for a ?bamboo pin to secure the contents), (Burma, Mandalay, 19th century). A characteristic example of a Burmese religious manuscript, inscribed on sheets of specially prepared fabric, stiffened and lacquered to produce a distinctive flexible effect. The text shows some occasional signs of wear and thumb-marking, with a little damage to one or two corners.
