Contemporary vellum, upper joints and spine neatly repaired, stamp of the Harvard Law School on the engraved frontispiece and in a few margins. Marginal worming throughout. Bound with another book. A scarce book of great importance, written by a senator of the Hanseatic town of Lübeck. The first part consists of a complete treatise of Commercial Law and Usage. The second part with the subtitle Documenta Commercialia gives a large body of actual legislation, treatises and privileges, etc., bearing on international commerce.
A remarkable section is “Argonautica Gustaviana” (2, pp. 373–540) which gives the establishment, history and constitution of the Swedish South Trade Company. This project by Willem Usselinx (1567–1647), chiefly intended to bring on a direct import from America had little success. But it was of some importance for the establishment of the Swedes in New Sweden, afterwards Pennsylvania. An appendix also includes many documents and memoirs of Usselinx bearing on his preceding enterprise, the Dutch West India Company. Kress 1097. Sabin 44661.
