Theophrastus | Gaza, Theodore (transl.)

De suffruticibus, herbisque, ac frugibus libri quattuor.

Argentorati, per Henricum Sybold, s.a. [1528]. 8vo. 96 leaves. Two historiated woodcut initials.Old boards, title-leaf slightly spotted. A reprint of sections vi–ix of Theophrastus’ De Historia et de Causis Plantarum, originally published in 1483, followed by Pliny’s Naturalis Historiae, section xx, 1–3, on last four leaves. Theophrastus’ Historia is the earliest book of scientific botany. Its ninth section, on the medicinal properties of plants — the earliest extant herbal, except for fragments of a Greek herbal, c. 350 B.C. — is believed to have been added somewhat after Theophrastus’ time. Edward Lee Greene, Landmarks of Botanical History, ed. Frank N. Egerton, 1, pp. 128–211 & passim for Theophrastus, & 2, pp. 518–27 for Theodore Gaza, the translator.
