Rare first edition of the full-score of the comic Von Heute auf Morgen, Schönberg’s first twelve-note opera. “It reflects the vogue for opera with a topical subject…, and the composer also wanted to prove that serial technique and a light-hearted vein of expression were not incompatible. The rather insipid libretto by Schönberg’s second wife Gertrud, who concealed her identity behind the pseudonym “Max Blonda”, is a social satire illustrating the inconsistencies of modern matrimonial assumptions. The opera is based on a single note-row that yields an infinite number of vocal themes of varying character — lyrical, arioso, and dramatic — which are handled with considerable flexibility and lightness of touch, despite the fact that contrapuntal writing prevails” (Mosco Carner in The New Oxford History of Music, 10, p. 352). The opera was completed on the 1st of January, 1929, and was first performed in Frankfurt on the 1st of November in the following year. “…die Aufführung war schlechterdings nicht zu übertreffen: eine der grössten und verbindlichsten Leistungen der gegenwärtigen Musikübung… Der Erfolg war schlagend. Ein Publikum, dem man einreden möchte, dies könne es nicht verstehen, zeigte sich aufs stärkste angefasst und rief nach Schönberg, dem Meister” (Th. Adorne in Die Musik, 22, p. 445 ff.).
