He first went to Constantinople in 1755 with the entourage of the ambassador de Vergennes and remained with him until 1763. On his return to France he was distinguished by the Duc de Choiseul and in 1767 was named French consul in the Crimea. He returned to Constantinople c. 1769 with orders to reorganize the army and navy; at the same time he fortified the banks of the Black Sea. De Tott returned to France in 1776, was appointed inspector general of the consulates of the Levant, and accompanied by Sonnini departed immediately on a tour of inspection which lasted till 1778” (Leonora Navari).
