First edition, first issue. The work was reissued in 1676. “This work is considered as the Missionary’s Handbook so that those missionaries destined for the Indies should be prepared with the necessary knowledge” (Streit). The first volume describes India, the second China and the countries of South East Asia, with several chapters on Christian doctrine.
“The two volumes constitute a compilation rather than a narrative, first a large gathering of geographical information on places from Persia eastward to China … But packed in among the geographical facts is a second aspect of the author’s agenda, which is noted in the subtitle, ‘con la confutatione dell’ idolotry, superstition & altri loro errore’” (John Parker, The Merchant Explorer, 28, pp. 14–5).
