First French edition of António de Gouvea’s account Jornada do Arcebispo de Goa Dom Frey Aleixo de Menezes (1606) of the Jesuit-Portuguese success in aligning the St. Thomas Christians of Malabar with the Latin Church. It was translated by Jean Baptiste de Glen, an Augustinian theologian. “The greatest Christian victory of these early years was the submission of the St. Thomas Christians of the Malabar Church to the authority of Rome. […] It was at the Synod of Diamper (…1599) that the Augustinian archbishop of Goa, Aleixo de Meneses (1559–1617) pressured the St. Thomas Christians into making public acknowledgement of the complete supremacy of the Roman Pope. […] That the civil and religious authorities worked closely together in Portuguese India is best illustrated by the appointment in 1602 of Archbishop Meneses to the post of governor. […] With the collaboration of António de Gouvea […], a fellow Augustinian then resident in Goa, [Meneses] prepared for the press his version of how the St. Thomas Christians were forced to cut their traditional ties with the patriarch of Chaldea. […] This victory of the Portuguese and the Catholic Church in India was proclaimed in Europe by the publication at Coimbra in 1606 of Gouvea’s edition of the Jornada” (Lach & Van Kley, Asia in the making of Europe, 3:1, pp. 320–21).
