Swedish-AmericanTreaty of Amity and Commerce This is the first treaty made by the United States with a power other than France, and by it Sweden became the first nation other than the French to recognize the United States. The treaty was in effect for a period of 15 years. It expired on February 6, 1799. Parts of it were however renewed in treaties of 1816 and 1827. The latter was cancelled by the United States on February 4, 1918.
