This was one of the earliest books to give authentic details respecting the Burmese Empire, which was almost an unknown land. In 1795 Captain Symes was sent by Sir John Shore on a mission to Burma, and obtained from the ‘Emperor of Ava’ a Royal order permitting a British Agent to reside at Rangoon to protect the interests of British Subjects.
