Strictly contemporary limp vellum, upper cover decorated in sepia-tinted ink to a bold scrolling design enclosing symbolic emblems (unidentified), above a large floral motif, lettered as title on the spine, old paper labels at head and foot, ties missing, generally in good condition. Lower edge of upper cover with small area of loss, old ownership marks on front paste-down. Without final, blank leaf. From the Donaueschingen library, inscribed by Baron Joseph Maria Christoph von Lassberg on front paste-down. Francesco Guicciardini’s (1483–1540) history was originally published posthumously by his nephew Agnolo in 1561. Cf. Printing and the Mind of Man, 85 (1st ed., 1561). Adams G-1510.
