Sweden is well-known for its richresources of the beautiful and valuable porphyry stone, found at Älfdalen and at other quarries in the province of Dalecarlia and at other locations. A large number of porphyry artifacts (mortars, etc.) were produced at the Älfdalen porphyry works, founded in 1788 by Count N. A. Bielke and Eric Hagström.
