Buchbeschreibung
Linné, Carl von
Chinensia Lagerströmiana. (Dissertation, resp. Johan Lorentz Odhelius.)
Holmiae [Stockholm], Jacob Merckell, 1754. 4to. iv + 36 pp. + folding engraved plate. Sewn asissued, some occasional browning to margins. Inscribed by Carl Stål (1833–1878) on title. First edition. One of the reasons why Linnaeus could send so many of his pupils abroad is found in his association with Count Carl Gustav Tessin and Magnus Lagerström, the director of the Swedish East India Company. Thanks to the foresight of these two gentlemen, it was decided that a naturalist should accompany each vessel of the Company. This decision facilitated the discoveries of Pehr Osbeck, Christopher Tärnström and Olof Torén. Lagerström procured for Uppsala University a valuable Chinese collection of specimens, including the medicinal plants found in apothecaries’ shops in China, and a Chinese herbal in 36 volumes.
In this thesis 53 species collected by Osbeck and others are described. 15 specimens are depicted on the plate. Hulth, p. 99. Bretschneider (1898), pp. 62–3. Stafleu & Cowan, 3, 4780. Soulsby 1844.
