Peking?, [early 18th-century]. Paper size: 17 x 53.5 cm. Size of frames varying, c. 14 x 46 cm. 36 + 46 + 32 + 17 + 13 = 144 leaves, woodblock printed on thick, fragile paper, mostly on both sides, text within border, 25 lines, eleven pages printed in pink colour, six of which with two illustrations. Contemporary wood covers; first and last leaf discoloured, several leaves with marginal waterstaining, margins of several leaves frayed or slightly defective, several short tears, final leaf with tears repaired (no loss of text), some ink annotations in Tibetan. Pancaraksa in Mongolian. The text is a Buddhist collection of rituals invoking the five protective goddesses. Pentti Aalto apparently overlooked the fact that the final page (with date) of the copy described in the catalogue of the Hedin collection and the text of which he published in vol. 10 of Asiatische Forschungen, is printed from two incomplete woodblocks more or less making up the page, the one with the date of printing supplied from another book! Whether the woodblocks for the edition to which our copy belongs are copied from the edition described by Aalto or vice versa is uncertain, but in our opinion (based on the quality of the paper, etc.) our edition may well be of an earlier date than the edition described by Aalto.
