For his researches into the Basque language, Humboldt “made extensive visits to the French and Spanish Basque districts [1799–1801], studying the language in remote villages and with local philologians, and consulted rare manuscripts in the Spanish royal library. He planned the compilation of a Basque-Spanish dictionary based on these studies. Instead, after twenty years of study he produced [the present work], in which he already attempted to trace a connexion between the character and evolution of the Basque peoples and the style and content of their language” (Printing and the Mind of Man, 301).
