(26 x 34 cm). 35 lithographed views (one folding, two tinted and two partly coloured in green), all captioned and most with descriptive text in Cyrillic. Stitched (loose) in publisher’s printed green wrappers, lacks backstrip, edges of wrappers slightly worn. In modern green fold-over box, printed label, small mark to upper cover of box. Printed at Arkhangelsk. Solovki Archipelago consists of six large and many small islands in the Onego Gulf of the White Sea in northernmost Russia close to the Arctic Circle. The area was famous for the vast and wealthy monastery founded in 1436. The monastery included a fortress and cathedral as well as many other buildings. It thrived for many years on agriculture and fishing and survived until the Russian Revolution. The monastery then became a harsh prison camp. A variety of buildings and landmarks of the Solovetski complex is depicted on the attractive plates of this rare book.
