In his graphic work of the 1930's, the artist often displayed a strongly classical spirit, but his line is never static or conventional - rather subtly distorted to give a sense of freedom and movement”. Castleman pp. 30, 61, 93, 111 & 242: ”In this, Picasso's first serious attempt to follow a text and provide an alternate vision of it, he exploited his innate talent for organizing line into compositions. Even where he depicted the movement of horses, they appear as if in a classic frieze, and their activity does not rupture the picture plane”.
