John Philpot Curran (1750-1817) was an Irish orator and barrister. He defended all the leaders of the United Irish conspiracy when brought to trial in 1798 with a rigorous defense that refused intimidation. Appointed Master of the Rolls with a seat in the Privy Coucil by the Whig Ministry of 1806. Famous for his defense of Robert Emmett. DNB

About Us

The owner, Richard Murian, has a BA in History from the University of California Davis; a MLS from the University of California, Berkeley; a Masters of Divinity from Trinity in Biblical Studies and a MA from California State University, Sacramento in the History of the American West. My further graduate studies were in Renaissance and Reformation studies with an emphasis on Italian humanism. My bookselling career began in 1970 under my own name but chose the name Alcuin Books in 1979 a name that has reflected my interest and philosophy. I have had open stores in Phoenix and since 2003 we have been in Scottsdale, Arizona.
