Montalembert's Un Debat led to his persecution and imprisonment; the second booklet transation: Letter on French History addressed to Prince Napoleon (Napoleon's cousin}, this booklet was also siezed leading to the arrest and condemnation of the editor. The next three deal with issues of the Rio de la Plata in terms of politics, economics and related issues, The final booklet deals with Russia and its Railroads. Barrault was devoted to the railroad in Russia, and the construction of network of 4,000 kilometers shortly after the Crimean War. These were all controversial issues especially to the French government which used censorship, imprisonment and death in an attempt to prevent their wider distribtuion.

About Us
The owner, Richard Murian, has a BA in History from the University of California Davis; a MLS from the University of California, Berkeley; a Masters of Divinity from Trinity in Biblical Studies and a MA from California State University, Sacramento in the History of the American West. My further graduate studies were in Renaissance and Reformation studies with an emphasis on Italian humanism. My bookselling career began in 1970 under my own name but chose the name Alcuin Books in 1979 a name that has reflected my interest and philosophy. I have had open stores in Phoenix and since 2003 we have been in Scottsdale, Arizona.
