Zerner, Henri
School of Fontainebleau, Etchings and Engravings
New Y: Harry N. Abrams, Inc. Publishers Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. 216pp. index. B&W illustrations. In 1530 a new artistic style was introduced into the royal palaces of France by Italian artists working under the patronage of Francis I. Rosso Fiorentino and Francesco Primaticcio, the founders of this style now known as Mannerism, worked in the royal chateau at Fontainebleau; by forming an artistic link between Italy and northern Europe, they were to excercise a wide and profound influence. Inspired by their compositions, the French and northern European artists who were engaged in decorating the chateau produced, in the years from 1542 to 1548, a quantity of exquisite etchings and engravings: These are the works which are discussed and illustrated in this book.
