A first-hand view of the west and Indian, written in the quiet, clean style of a letter to a superior. Interior clean and tight, without marks, except for intelligent pencil notes on last free endpaper. Bound in red cloth, with gilt letters on spine a cover, and gilt profiles of ealry missionaries at corners of front panel. The spine is slightly faded, with small tears and chipping to crown and foot. In mylar wrap. Howes D-289; Sabin 82277; Wagner-Camp u 308. Scarce. The true first edition of one of the great figures in dealing with the Plains Indians.

The owner, Richard Murian, has a BA in History from the University of California Davis; a MLS from the University of California, Berkeley; a Masters of Divinity from Trinity in Biblical Studies and a MA from California State University, Sacramento in the History of the American West. My further graduate studies were in Renaissance and Reformation studies with an emphasis on Italian humanism. My bookselling career began in 1970 under my own name but chose the name Alcuin Books in 1979 a name that has reflected my interest and philosophy.
