Justus von Liebig who had authored Die Organische Chemie in ihre Anwendung auf Agricultur und Physiologie in 1840 was one of the most formidable figures in chemistry during the mid-nineteenth century. He had established the radical theory of organic compounds, the hydrogen theory of acids and championed the idea of using artificial fertilizer in agriculture. He established the "Law of minimu" which even today is a basic concept in agriculture. A scarce item.

The owner, Richard Murian, has a BA in History from the University of California Davis; a MLS from the University of California, Berkeley; a Masters of Divinity from Trinity in Biblical Studies and a MA from California State University, Sacramento in the History of the American West. My further graduate studies were in Renaissance and Reformation studies with an emphasis on Italian humanism. My bookselling career began in 1970 under my own name but chose the name Alcuin Books in 1979 a name that has reflected my interest and philosophy. I have had open stores in Phoenix and since 2003 we have been in Scottsdale, Arizona.
