PLATO.

The Works of Plato Abridg'd: with an Account of His Life, Philosophy, Morals, and Politicks. Together with a Translation of his choicest Dialogues.

London: Riverton, Strahan (and seven others), 1772. THIRD EDITION, CORRECTED Volume 1: TP + [i]-[ii] = Table of Contents + 1-336; Volume 2: TP + [3]-334; large 12mo. An early, two-volume attempt to bring Plato to the English speaking world in their native tongue. A complete translation of all of Plato's dialogues into English would not be published until 29 years after this was book was printed. The translations here were made "from the French, by several hands" with notes provided by M. Dacier. Contemporary, full calf boards, sympathetically rebacked in full leather with gilt lettering on the spine. The boards are a bit worn but well defined. Small bookplate for former owner (I. Drewitt) to inside cover of both volumes. The front flyleaf of volume two with ten lines of blue ink indexing for the book. Text clean and crisp. A pretty copy of this early translation of Plato into English. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
