Stanley was one of the foremost classical scholars of his day and here presents one of the earliest expositions of the history of Greek philosophy in English. Stanley "adopted the general structure, the biographical emphasis, the doxographical method characteristic of Diogenes [Laertius]. Stanley's history ran into four editions in England between 1655 and 1743 and was translated into Latin and published in that language at Amsterdam in 1690, Leipzig in 1711, and Venice as late as 1733." (EP, VI, p. 227) The frontispiece of the author is by Faithorne. The book also contains twenty-six full-length portraits of philosophers in the text. A beautiful and well-preserved contemporary full-leather binding with seven compartments on the spine and spine label with gilt lettering on a red field. Slight chipping to top and bottom of spine. Joints beginning to separate at top (1 compartment front and back) and bottom (1 compartment front and two compartments back) but well secured. Worm holes (approximately 1" x 1.5") at bottom of page, just barely impinging on text on some pages and before becoming insignificant at page 5 and then becoming progressively smaller before disappearing at page 109. Overall, a lovely contemporary copy. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
