(West, Rebecca) - Glendinning, Victoria

Rebecca West. A Life.

"London; Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1987. First edition. [xv] + 288 pp. + 8 leaves with b&w photos. Publisher's cloth with printed dustjacket. Minimal creasing on the jacket at head of spine. A very fine copy. ""The story of Rebecca West, who lived from 1892 to 1983, is the story of twentieth-century women. The wayward youngest daughter of an unhappy marriage, R. W. marched with the suffragettes as a teenager; she embarked on an affair with an older man, the author H. G. Wells, and became an unmarried mother. A radical socialist in her youth and a passionate opponent of Communism in her later years, she won fame as a novelist, critic, travel-writer and investigative journalist. Her intimate life was as complex and stormy as her public career and her politics: even her successful marriage was not quite all it seemed and her relationship with her son was ultimately tragic. Yet she loved life and lived dynamically."" (Front flap)."
