Edition Originale très rare de cette importante dissertation consacrée au nerf facial et dédiée à Friedrich Arnold (1803-1890), lequel publia peu après son traité classique de neuroanatomie ("Icones nervorum capitis", 1834). "The subject of this dissertation has given rise to much investigation and difference of sentiment. The author seems fully acquainted with every thing that has been done on the subject, and his chief object is to show 'that the facial nerve is not a mere motor nerve, as Sir Charles Bell, and those who follow him, maintain, but that it likewise comunicates sensibility'. Dr. Gaedechen's dissertation is divided into two parts - the first physiological, the latter pathological. The first chapter of the former is 'on the division of of the spinal and cerebral nerves, into nerves which convey voluntary motion to the muscles, and sensibility'. In this he concludes, after an examination of authorities, 'that the nervus vagus is a sensific nerve, and that the muscular motions attributed to it - the motion of the muscles of the larynx and pharynx - are not to be referred to it, but to the accessory nerve'…" (Dunglison).
